Hollywoodnews.com: You have to admire the decisions made by Oscilloscope Laboratories, the moderate-sized production company guided by Beastie Boy Adam Yauch. The company just announced plans to release a documentary about famed Beat writer William S. Burroughs entitled “A Man Within.” The picture, directed by Yony Leyser, showcases a number of legendary music icons like Iggy Pop, Patti Smith and Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo. “Within” joins a stable of creatively challenging titles in the Oscilloscope library. Yauch and his team have taken chances on non-mainstream material and connected with features like “Wendy & Lucy” with Michelle Williams and documentaries like “Flow,” about our planet’s diminished water supply. Yauch’s production company knows how to pick projects. It’s also learning how to get them in front of the right audience. “A Man Within” currently is playing festivals. Indiewire.com says it will have a limited theatrical run before moving on the U.S. television and DVD. You can see a trailer for the film here. Burroughs passed away in 1997. He’s most famous for the novel “The Naked Lunch,” but had an impact on modern pop culture bv “performing” with Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain on “‘The “Priest’ They Called Him” and appearing in U2’s 1997 video for “Last Night On Earth.” At the very least, “A Man Within” could expose Burroughs to a larger, younger audience, much like “Gonzo” re-introduced Hunter S. Thompson to this jaded generation. Keep an eye on local listings to see if (and when) the Burroughs documentary plays your town.
